Over 3,600 polling stations across Georgia opened on October 1 morning for the parliamentary election, civil.ge reports.
The voting is ongoing peacefully, according to the country’s Central Election Commission (CEC). It said the initial data on voter turnout was expected by 10:30am local time.
Simultaneously with parliamentary elections, voters in the Autonomous Republic of Adjara are also electing 21-member local legislative body, Supreme Council.
President Mikheil Saakashvili cast ballot, saying said that “fate of our statehood is being decided”.
Saakashvili, who came at the polling station with wife and six-year old son, said that it is “a historic day for Georgia.”
“This choice will affect not only the current generation, but many future generations as well. I am sure there will be a high voter turnout today,” Saakashvili said.
“Georgia – and I am not speaking about victory of political parties – Georgia will definitely win,” he added.
