Pashinyan says arms are acquired with no intent to use

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that Armenia acquires weapons with the hope of never having to use them. Speaking at an event dedicated to National Security Service (NSS) Workers’ Day, he emphasized the importance of building strong security capabilities, while also stressing that avoiding the use of force should remain a priority.

“We acquire weapons, military equipment, and other assets in the hope and intent of not using them. That is very important, because the National Security Service must possess powerful operational capacities, special forces must be highly capable, but avoiding the need to use force should be the NSS’s core mission,” said Pashinyan, as quoted by Sputnik Armenia.

He also addressed the issue of illegal drug trafficking, cautioning against complacency simply because it is a global problem.

“The challenges related to drug trafficking are serious. We must understand this is a major national security threat. How much energy should we spend on those hiding a fraction of a gram under a stone, versus those importing large quantities or organizing local production? Catching ten people with small packages misleads us. It’s obvious there are centralized networks involved in this trade,” Pashinyan said.

The prime minister stressed that the state must focus its efforts on uncovering import and domestic production chains.

He also underscored the importance of enhancing the analytical capabilities of the NSS, stating that developing analytical tools is just as critical as expanding operational capacities. In this context, he noted the need to adopt proper strategies in response to the rising threats of the modern world.
