The European Commission has outlined its position following reports circulated in the Italian media.
A European Commission spokesperson said there is currently no concrete proposal to establish a return center for irregular migrants on the territory of Armenia.
Questions on whether Armenia is among the countries where the creation of migrant return hubs has been proposed, how credible the reports actively circulating in recent days, particularly in the Italian media, are, and whether such discussions have taken place with the Armenian authorities were addressed to the European Commission spokesperson, Factor.am reported.
“The Commission is aware that member states are exploring possible solutions with certain third countries. However, there are currently no concrete proposals on the table,” the spokesperson said.
According to the spokesperson, the Commission is ready to assess any proposal provided it is fully based on close and mutually beneficial cooperation with partners and complies with the applicable legal framework.
The spokesperson added that the effectiveness of the European Union’s new rules on migration and asylum depends on their proper implementation.
“As an essential part of a firm and fair migration system, people who have no right to remain in the EU must return. This is key to maintaining public trust and protecting the integrity of the asylum system,” the spokesperson said.
Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera had reported that Italy planned to present at the European Union Council meeting scheduled for August 4 a proposal to establish detention centers for irregular migrants from EU member states in several countries, including Armenia.
Ani Badalyan, spokesperson for Armenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the issue of establishing a detention center in Armenia for irregular migrants from European Union member states has not been discussed with Armenia.
