MP asks which legal act sets Armenia at 29,743 sq km

Artur Khachatryan, a lawmaker from the Hayastan parliamentary faction, raised a question in the National Assembly about which legal act established the territory of the Republic of Armenia at 29,743 square kilometers.

“The territory of the Republic of Armenia was 29,800 square kilometers. When you round 29,743, it becomes 29,700. Today, a legitimate question arises: where did 57 square kilometers of Armenia’s sovereign territory go?” he said, Factor.am reports.

The lawmaker also addressed a remark by Civil Contract MP Arusyak Julhakyan that relevant maps exist. Khachatryan countered that a map in itself is not considered a legal document.

“A map is not a normative legal act. Yes, normative legal acts are developed on the basis of maps, and maps derive from normative legal acts, but a map as such is not a normative legal act. Therefore, my question was legitimate: when did 29,800 square kilometers suddenly become 29,743? What is that legal act? Shouldn’t we know when it was adopted?” Khachatryan said.

During the National Assembly’s May 22 session, Hayastan faction secretary Artsvik Minasyan asked the ruling faction what the current area of Armenia’s sovereign territory was. Then-parliament speaker Alen Simonyan responded that Armenia’s sovereign territory had been 29,743 square kilometers since independence.
