Armenia’s second former president, Robert Kocharyan, has been charged. His lawyer, Aram Orbelyan, announced the development.
“It is related to Kocharyan’s powers as president, and it is expected that a motion seeking his detention will be submitted to the court,” the lawyer said.
Factor TV sources reported that Kocharyan was taken by ambulance to a medical center.
An ambulance arrived and parked in front of the Anti-Corruption Committee building, where police prevented journalists from entering.
After leaving the Anti-Corruption Committee building, lawyer Aram Orbelyan declined even to say whom the ambulance had arrived for, describing the information as relating to a person’s health and therefore not subject to disclosure.
Meanwhile, lawyer Aleksandr Kochubayev said Kocharyan’s elder son, Sedrak Kocharyan, was detained for the purpose of being brought before a court for a detention hearing.
Under this form of detention, a person may be held in custody for a maximum of 24 hours. This means Kocharyan is expected to be brought before a court on the issue of detention before that period expires.
