Pashinyan says Russian base not vital necessity for Armenia

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said there was no discussion of the Russian military base stationed in Armenia during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Bishkek. He made the remarks after a government meeting while commenting on the outcome of his talks with Putin.

He said the presence of the 102nd military base on Armenian territory was not a vital necessity, according to Sputnik Armenia.

“During this period, we have never raised the issue of the Russian 102nd military base stationed in Armenia. However, it is also not the case that we consider the presence of the 102nd military base on Armenian territory a vital necessity,” Pashinyan said.

According to the prime minister, if Russia decides to withdraw its military base from Armenia, the Armenian authorities will not object.

“If they express a desire to stay, we are also ready to discuss that, but we have never raised this issue during this period,” the prime minister said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said in comments to reporters following his Sept. 1 meeting with Nikol Pashinyan in Bishkek that if Armenia believes it does not need the Russian military base, Russia is ready to withdraw it as early as tomorrow.
