EU official says Armenia visa-free timeline remains unclear

European Commission representative Paula Pinho has not confirmed that a visa-free regime between EU and Armenia will be introduced by 2029, saying it is too early to predict any timeframe, RIA Novosti reports.

In July, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said he expected visa liberalization with the EU by 2029.

“It is still too early to predict whether 2029 or another date will be the point at which visa liberalization takes place. I would say that, yes, it is still far too early for that kind of certainty,” Pinho said at a briefing in Brussels.

Armenia’s parliament adopted a law “On Launching the Process of the Republic of Armenia’s Accession to the European Union” in March 2025.

At the same time, Pashinyan earlier acknowledged that adoption of the law alone does not mean the country can join the EU. This would require submitting a formal application, obtaining candidate status, securing the consent of EU member states and receiving the approval of Armenian citizens.
