Armenia sets out COP17 vision in Prague

On September 10 in Prague, during the concluding meeting of the 32nd OSCE Economic and Environmental Forum, Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Robert Abisoghomonyan participated in a session titled “Role of Science in Diplomacy,” presenting the key priorities and vision of Armenia’s presidency of the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17).

He addressed the complementary role of science and diplomacy in tackling global environmental challenges.

Abisoghomonyan emphasized the importance of scientific data and expert knowledge in shaping biodiversity conservation policies and decision-making. He noted that science can contribute both to a more in-depth assessment of existing and emerging risks and to their forecasting and the development of effective responses.

Addressing preparations for COP17, the deputy minister highlighted the inclusive approach adopted by Armenia’s presidency, aimed at ensuring the full and meaningful participation of governments, international organizations, scientific and academic communities, civil society, young people, women, Indigenous Peoples and local communities, as well as the private sector.

Presenting the events planned as part of COP17, Robert Abisoghomonyan spoke about the Leaders’ Summit titled “Leaders for Nature.” The summit is expected to result in the adoption of the political declaration “Yerevan Call for Action,” reaffirming once again the fundamental importance of biodiversity for sustainable development, food security, climate resilience and well-being.

The deputy minister also highlighted the first Global Review of collective progress toward implementing the goals and targets set out in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. It was noted that the process will provide an opportunity to assess progress achieved, identify remaining gaps and determine areas where greater efforts are needed.

Abisoghomonyan also presented Armenia’s initiatives within COP17. They are aimed at expanding positive environmental incentives, encouraging the exchange of experience on effective area-based conservation measures, developing biodiversity monitoring systems through the use of new technologies, and strengthening international cooperation on the conservation of mountain and freshwater ecosystems.

Concluding his remarks, the Armenian official reaffirmed Armenia’s readiness to continue cooperation with OSCE participating States and international partners to secure ambitious, forward-looking and practical outcomes at COP17 in Yerevan.
