Galyan says Constitution draft includes provisions on Church

Armenian Justice Minister Srbuhi Galyan said the current draft Constitution contains provisions concerning the Armenian Apostolic Church. The minister made the statement during a government question-and-answer session in the National Assembly.

“As of now, the reference to the Church is present in the draft text of the Constitution,” Galyan said, according to Sputnik Armenia.

She specifically emphasized that the information she provided concerns the version currently under consideration. Galyan also clarified that the text of the new Constitution to be published will not be the final version. It will be presented as a draft and will go through the relevant stages envisaged for its consideration.

Back in June, Galyan said that revising church-state relations in the text of the new Constitution was not under discussion at that time. Earlier, Alen Simonyan, who held the post of National Assembly speaker, had not ruled out that the new Constitution could revise church-state relations, as well as the issue of possible state involvement in the Church’s activities with the aim of “ensuring transparency.”
