Second criminal case launched over Shaki incident

Another criminal proceeding has been initiated over the Azerbaijani serviceman’s entry into Armenia on suspicion of illegally crossing the state border and smuggling firearms, the Prosecutor General’s Office said, Factor.am reported.

On Oct. 1, the Prosecutor General’s Office said criminal proceedings had been initiated over the incident recorded that day in the Shaki settlement of Sisian community, Syunik Province, on suspicion of causing serious bodily harm using a weapon, illegal circulation of firearms and violation of the inviolability of a residence.

The newly initiated criminal proceeding has been joined with the existing case.

The wounded citizen is the mother of three minor children. As Shaki administrative head Ruben Manucharyan told RFE/RL, the incident took place in front of the children.

“He had entered that woman’s house. The children had just returned from school and were at home, and they were the ones who said that he had injured their mother and fled. The woman managed to get out of the house and escape. According to preliminary information, she suffered a minor gunshot wound in the heel area, and her life is not in danger,” Manucharyan said.

The administrative head also said the intruder had sustained an injury, with a stab wound on the left side of his chest.

“We followed the blood traces and searched together with law enforcement officers. The relevant units, armed and wearing body armor, very quickly and efficiently neutralized him without any incident. When we caught him, he was already exhausted from blood loss. I asked him a word or two in Azerbaijani, and he said, ‘oldum’ — ‘I’m dying.’ I told him, ‘You’re not going to die.’ Law enforcement officers took the assault rifle he had, and he was taken away in an ambulance under military escort,” he said.

Armenia’s National Security Service said on Oct. 1 that the Azerbaijani serviceman had illegally crossed Armenia’s state border and shot an Armenian citizen in the leg in the Shaki settlement of Syunik Province. According to Azerbaijani official agencies, the serviceman left his place of service under unknown circumstances on Sept. 26. Armenia’s National Security Service said Azerbaijan informed the Armenian side about this on Sept. 29. The Azerbaijani serviceman was transferred to Yerevan.
