Overchuk says Russia expects Armenia to remain in EAEU

Russia hopes Armenia will continue constructive work within the Eurasian Economic Union, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk told the Vesti news service.

According to him, Armenia has been a member of the union for slightly more than 10 years, and during that period the country’s GDP has nearly tripled. Accordingly, GDP per capita has also tripled, Vedomosti reports.

“Our trade, at its peak in 2024, reached $12.4 billion, while Armenia’s GDP at the time stood at approximately $26-27 billion. And, of course, we very much hope that Armenia will continue constructive work together with the other member states of the Eurasian Economic Union,” Overchuk said.

On October 2, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said Armenia should not rush to join the European Union or abandon cooperation with the EAEU. He suggested that Yerevan first assess whether the European market could compensate for the volume of exports Armenia currently sends to EAEU countries. In particular, Lukashenko cited supplies of Armenian brandy, vegetables and fruit.

On September 29, the press service of the Russian Security Council staff said Armenia’s accession to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court was, among other factors, linked to Yerevan’s policy of pursuing closer ties with the European Union.
