Mirzoyan says enclaves pose no obstacle to Azerbaijan peace deal

The existing enclave and exclave issue between Armenia and Azerbaijan is not an obstacle to signing a peace agreement, Armenian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Ararat Mirzoyan has stated.

The minister addressed the sensitive nature of the enclave and exclave issue, noting that any potential exchange of territories would require a nationwide referendum, Armenpress reported.

“This is a sensitive issue. It is a matter that concerns all of us, and it is one that would require a nationwide referendum if an exchange of territories takes place. Enclaves and exclaves, nevertheless, complicate life for countries, at least technically, even if relations are excellent in every respect. You know Azerbaijan’s rhetoric. They say they will not sign the peace agreement until you amend the Constitution. But they have not said they will refuse to sign unless the enclave issue is resolved, have they?” Mirzoyan said.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has also previously addressed the issue of enclaves and exclaves between the two countries. The head of government stated that a possible exchange of these territories is among the options being considered during Armenian-Azerbaijani negotiations.
