World-renowned actor and environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio has expressed support for an international initiative launched in Yerevan aimed at protecting and restoring animal species threatened with extinction.
Armenian Minister of Environment Hambardzum Matevosyan announced that Yerevan has become the launch site of a new international biodiversity conservation initiative. The program envisages an initial financial commitment of $500 million to restore 100 species that are critically endangered or already extinct in the wild across 30 countries, Factor.am reports.
“Today in Yerevan, ahead of COP17, we have officially launched the Coalition for Action on the Recovery of Endangered Species (CARES) jointly with Colombia, with 16 countries from around the world joining as founding participants.
The initiative has also received public support from world-renowned actor, environmentalist and Re:wild founder Leonardo DiCaprio, who praised the commitment to achieving measurable results in the recovery of endangered species.
The involvement of the Bezos Earth Fund in international species conservation efforts is also significant. Through the Phoenix Species Project, implemented jointly with Re:wild, the foundation is supporting the recovery of 100 species that are critically endangered or already extinct in the wild across 30 countries, with an initial commitment of $500 million.
All of this demonstrates that the international cooperation taking shape in Yerevan is bringing together governments, the scientific community, environmental organizations and philanthropic foundations. Armenia is becoming not only a platform for global discussions on biodiversity conservation but also a center for developing new international initiatives and practical cooperation,” he noted.
