Zakharova calls Pashinyan’s response to EAEU report hasty, aggressive

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova has described Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s reaction to a report on the potential suspension of the EAEU treaty as hasty and aggressive.

Zakharova stressed that the preparation of such a report had come as no surprise to anyone. According to her, the presidents of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia adopted a statement containing the relevant instructions back in May of this year, RIA Novosti reports.

“Therefore, it is simply strange to suggest that this was some kind of unexpected, destructive action. At the same time, the reaction you mentioned can be characterized as hasty and, on the whole, even aggressive on the part of the Armenian leadership. Perhaps this is merely an attempt to divert public attention from pressing problems that have come to a head, using every possible means, while once again shifting responsibility onto someone else,” Zakharova said during a briefing.

In March 2025, Armenia’s National Assembly adopted a law providing for the launch of the process of the Republic of Armenia’s accession to the European Union. Russia has repeatedly stated that simultaneous membership in the customs unions of the EU and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is impossible.

Earlier, representatives of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan presented a report at the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council examining the potential consequences of suspending the application of the Treaty on the Eurasian Economic Union to Armenia.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, responding to journalists’ questions about the document, described it as “the third attempt to destabilize the country internally and deprive it of its independence.”
