Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, commenting on the physical altercation that broke out during a National Assembly session, expressed support for the actions of the ruling Civil Contract parliamentary faction.
“I condemn violence, but I support the measures taken today by the Civil Contract faction. Just because someone is in the opposition does not mean they can behave insolently. Whether it was with a chair or something else, it was proportionate and justified,” he said, according to Radar.am.
Pashinyan also stated that the opposition bore full responsibility for the incident.
He said that when a member of Strong Armenia behaved insolently at the parliamentary rostrum and refused to apologize despite repeated appeals, it was clear that the situation would end this way.
A physical confrontation erupted in the National Assembly between lawmakers from Civil Contract and Strong Armenia, following a speech by Civil Contract member Taron Chakhoyan. The verbal dispute escalated into a brawl, during which National Assembly Deputy Speaker Vahagn Aleksanyan threw a chair toward opposition lawmakers.
