Armenia ranks among 24 countries with lowest hunger levels

According to the published 2026 Global Hunger Index (GHI) data, hunger levels in Armenia are classified as low. Armenia is among 24 countries with a Global Hunger Index score below 5.

For comparison, the average index score for Europe and Central Asia stands at 5.0, while the global average reaches 18.1. Armenia’s performance is therefore favorable compared with both regional and global figures, Auroranews.am reports.

Over the past 26 years, Armenia’s hunger index has declined sharply. While the country’s score stood at 20.3 in 2000, it had fallen to 2.5 by 2026.

The Global Hunger Index uses the following classification scale:

  • 9.9 or below — low hunger.
  • 10.0–19.9 — moderate hunger.
  • 20.0–34.9 — serious hunger.
  • 35.0–49.9 — alarming hunger.
  • 50.0 or above — extremely alarming hunger.

Meanwhile, the most concerning scores in the rankings were recorded in Somalia, Sudan, Burundi, South Sudan and Yemen. Hunger conditions in these countries were assessed as the most severe.

Armenia’s GHI score is calculated using four main indicators reflecting the population’s food security and children’s health.

Specifically:

  • Undernourishment: Less than 2.5% of Armenia’s population falls into this category.
  • Child stunting (under age five): The rate stands at 6.2%.
  • Child wasting (under age five): The recorded rate is 2.9%.
  • Child mortality (under age five): The rate stands at 1.0%.
