Court orders one-month detention of Samvel Karapetyan

A court has ordered Strong Armenia party leader Samvel Karapetyan to be held in custody for one month, granting a motion filed by investigators, Panorama.am reports.

Following the ruling, Strong Armenia issued a statement accusing Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan of using state institutions to suppress political opponents.

“Today’s decision to detain Samvel Karapetyan once again proves that Armenia’s state institutions are carrying out Pashinyan’s orders,” the party said.

The statement linked Karapetyan’s detention to disagreements over constitutional changes and Armenia’s relations with Azerbaijan, accusing Pashinyan of seeking to impose what the party called “Aliyev’s Constitution.”

Strong Armenia also referred to Karapetyan’s detention in 2025, alleging that he had been targeted for defending the Armenian Apostolic Church.

“Now Pashinyan will fail again. He will not succeed in imposing Aliyev’s Constitution because the Armenian people oppose it, and the united opposition will not yield to Pashinyan’s pressure or allow him to lead the country toward concessions,” the statement said.

The party maintained that Karapetyan would continue his political activities despite his detention, concluding with a call to reject what it described as “Aliyev’s Constitution” and defend Armenia’s independence.

On the evening of November 4, opposition representatives gathered at Karapetyan’s home for discussions. Narek Karapetyan, head of the Strong Armenia parliamentary faction, said the participating political forces had adopted a joint statement and announced the formation of a nationwide opposition coalition.
