Armenian national team and club supporter groups have proposed former international footballer Gevorg Ghazaryan as a candidate for president of the Football Federation of Armenia (FFA).
In a joint statement, the groups called for changes in the federation’s leadership and outlined plans to assemble a professional team around Ghazaryan.
“Armenian football stands at a decisive turning point. The FFA presidential election is approaching, and it could bring to a conclusion the struggle that began two years ago and mark a turning point for the future of Armenian football,” the statement said.
The supporters argued that the federation should be led by someone with direct experience in professional football and a thorough understanding of the challenges facing the sport in Armenia.
They highlighted Ghazaryan’s career with the Armenian national team and clubs in Armenia and Europe, as well as his reputation within the football community.
The initiative extends beyond Ghazaryan’s proposed candidacy. According to the statement, the groups intend to bring together former national team players, coaches and specialists in football administration, law and sports management.
The supporters said they would present the proposed team’s members and a development programme for Armenian football in the near future.
Ghazaryan currently serves on the coaching staff of Ararat-Armenia.
The FFA presidential election is scheduled for December. Incumbent president Armen Melikbekyan has previously announced that he will not seek another term.
