The report, the text of which has been amended several times, contains some assessments which are not acceptable for the official Yerevan. The document particularly reads about the necessity of withdrawing the Armenian forces from the Eastern part of the security zone around Karabakh called ”occupied territory”. The matter concerns Fizuli, Jebrail, Zangelan, Kubatli and Aghdam. We shall note that Lachin and Kelbajar, dividing NKR from Armenia, were not mentioned there. The attempts of the parliamentarians with pro-Armenian orientation to prevent the including of this phrase in the text were useless. At the same time, the report contains a demand to remove the blockade of Armenia addressed to Azerbaijan and Turkey. The necessity to restore the railway communication via Meghri and Nakhichevan was mentioned. The railway was passing through regions presently controlled by Karabakh forces. So, this proposal of the European parliament also supposes giving the security zone under the control of Azerbaijan till the status of Karabakh is decided. We shall note that the assessments unacceptable for Armenia were included in the report as a result of the lobbying activity of Azerbaijani emissaries. Totally 105 amendments were included in the document.
However, it is worth noting that among there were also other amendments favorable for Armenia. It became possible thanks to the attempts of the representatives of the Armenian Federation of Europe. The clause reminding about the decision of the European Parliament adopted in 1987 is particularly important. The matter concerns a resolution recognizing the fact of the Genocide of Armenians in the Ottoman Turkey. The document has formulated clearly that the recognition of the Genocide by Turkey must be one of the prior conditions for its membership in the EU. The European parliamentarians seem to have forgotten about this requirement. Mentioning of the decision adopted 17 years ago was not by pure accident. This is a reminder to numerous opponents of Turkey’s membership in the EU that the resources for the fight against claims of Ankara are not exhausted…
