Russian President’s visit to Armenia gave rise to hot debates in Moscow, Yerevan and certainly Baku, where sharp criticism dominated, Felix Stanevsky, senior fellow of the Caucasus department at the Institute of CIS Studies, said in an article he titled “Speculations about the state visit to Armenia.”
“Undoubtedly, the knot of Dmitry Medvedev’s visit was signing of the protocol on introduction of amendments to the agreement on deployment of the Russian military base in Gyumri. However, the protocol envisages considerable changes not in the military but in geopolitical situation in South Caucasus. Signing this protocol, Russia confirmed its intention to consolidate positions in the region,” he said.
“Small and medium-sized countries are gaining importance for resolution of international disputes and relations between superpowers.”
