An Armenian Society in Tbilisi: Problems and Perspectives conference held in Tbilisi focused on burning issues of Armenian society in Georgia.
The conference hosted representatives of NGOs, diplomatic corps and various confessions.
Community representatives expressed their discontent over participation of Armenians in social and political life of Georgia. Among problems described were education and employment –related difficulties, caused by the lack of knowledge of state language. Operation of Armenian church in Georgia was also on discussion agenda.
As Georgian politician Elena Tevdoradze stated, the constitution allows for all residents to register their religious affiliation. “However, we refuse to provide a status to Echmiadzin church in Georgia, the Armenian Apostolic Church in Georgia being a mere subsidiary,” Ms. Tevdoradze said, walking out of the conference hall afterwards.
