New war in Karabakh will be dire calamity for all parties interested in conflict resolution

Head of the Central Information Department at the Artsakh President’s Office David Babayan said that the first visit of Special Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office for Protracted Conflicts Giedrius Cekuolis to the zone of the Karabakh-Azerbaijani conflict can be described as fact-finding.

“Cekuolis is a new man, who is not familiar with the conflict, and there are both positive and negative aspects in it,” Babayan told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter.

“The fact that Europe may open a new page in its policy in the region is among positive aspects. However, Cekuolis needs time to familiarize himself with the situation, what is bad due to lack of time. He will not manage to study out such a complicated conflict, as the one between Karabakh and Azerbaijan,” noted Babayan.

According to him, Europe has no levers for exerting pressure on Azerbaijan. “We see that Aliyev’s militarist rhetoric has reached a new destructive level, and it can be stopped either by the Armenian parties to the conflict – Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh, or by Russia and the U.S.,” Babayan said, adding that if Baku indeed ventures upon a war, its consequences will be observed in the entire region.

“The countries interested in the Karabakh conflict settlement will be voluntarily or involuntarily engaged in hostilities, what may become a catastrophe for all parties,” Babayan concluded.
