Pashinyan appointed Armenia’s Prime Minister for fourth time

Nikol Pashinyan has been appointed Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia.

President Vahagn Khachaturyan hosted Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at the Presidential Residence and signed the decree appointing him Prime Minister of Armenia, following his nomination by the Civil Contract faction in the National Assembly.

“It is a great honor for me, under Article 149 of the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia, to sign the decree appointing you Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, following the proposal I received from the political majority in the National Assembly. I sincerely congratulate you and wish you great patience, resilience and determination to lead us through these difficult times and guide the country toward a prosperous future.

I am also confident that your principled approach will contribute to strengthening the statehood of the Republic of Armenia, based on constitutional principles, for the peaceful and dignified future of the people of Armenia,” Khachaturyan said.

Pashinyan thanked the president and noted that when he first assumed the office of prime minister in 2018, it would have been difficult to predict the path the country would take and that they would be able to overcome those challenges.

“I hope that the ninth convocation of the National Assembly will ultimately become a platform where political ideas, views and visions, rather than personalities, come into conflict. Naturally, debates should be, and will be, intense, but what matters is what those debates are about. They should focus on political, economic and socio-economic issues, not on mutual personal attacks. In any case, we have heard your message and will be guided by it. I hope we will succeed in staying on this course, because the process is not one-sided. If the opposition also finds this approach acceptable, I believe we will achieve much higher-quality work,” Pashinyan said.

Later the same day, the president also accepted the government’s resignation.

Pashinyan was first appointed prime minister on May 8, 2018, following the revolution. On October 16, 2018, he resigned to facilitate snap parliamentary elections while continuing to serve as acting prime minister.

Following the snap parliamentary elections held on December 9, 2018, he was again appointed prime minister on January 14, 2019. On April 25, 2021, Pashinyan once more resigned, and after the snap parliamentary elections of June 20, 2021, he was appointed Prime Minister of Armenia on August 2, 2021.
