Armenian parliament votes for speaker

Armenia’s National Assembly has begun a secret ballot to elect the speaker of parliament. The only candidate for the post is Ruben Rubinyan, a lawmaker from the ruling Civil Contract faction.

The Strong Armenia faction has announced it will vote against Rubinyan’s candidacy. Faction leader Narek Karapetyan made the statement in parliament, according to Armenpress.

The Hayastan faction had earlier announced that it would not participate in the secret ballot for the election of the National Assembly speaker.

The first session of Armenia’s ninth-convocation National Assembly began on August 2. During the opening sitting, lawmakers started debating the election of the parliamentary speaker.

Following the parliamentary elections held on June 7, the new National Assembly consists of the ruling Civil Contract party with 64 seats, the opposition Strong Armenia alliance with 29 seats, and the opposition Hayastan alliance with 12 seats.
