There is no confrontation between Armenia and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), Russia’s Permanent Representative to the CSTO Viktor Vasilyev said.
According to Vasilyev, it is incorrect to claim that such a confrontation has continued since 2021, during the escalation in Armenian-Azerbaijani relations, RIA Novosti reported.
“There is no ‘conflict’ between Armenia and the CSTO. It is fundamentally wrong to say that it has supposedly continued since 2021,” Vasilyev said in response to a question from the news agency.
The diplomat said that for many years, including on various international platforms, efforts had been made to find compromise solutions to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. He added that Russia had proposed settlement options that, according to him, are well known to both the Armenian and Azerbaijani leaderships.
Vasilyev also stressed that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict did not fall within the CSTO’s mandate and said the Armenian authorities were aware of this.
At the same time, Armenia has never stated that it expected CSTO support on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Instead, Yerevan appealed to the organization after Armenia’s internationally recognized borders were violated in 2021 and 2022.
Armenia announced in 2024 that it was freezing its participation in the CSTO.
