Civil Contract lawmaker Andranik Kocharyan has announced that he will no longer serve on the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Defense and Security in the ninth convocation of parliament and will instead join the Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs.
Speaking to reporters, Kocharyan said that, in his assessment, the Defense and Security Committee had achieved significant results over the past eight years. He also recalled the work of the two parliamentary investigative commissions established during that period, Pastinfo reported.
“The State and Legal Affairs Committee oversees the reports of investigative bodies, including that of the Prosecutor General. In essence, they relate to security issues, where my experience can be useful. I am changing direction, and I believe I should bring a new perspective to my new role,” Kocharyan said.
According to the lawmaker, his professional experience could be particularly valuable during discussions of legal issues related to national security within the new committee.
Earlier, Civil Contract lawmaker Ruben Rubinyan was elected Speaker of Armenia’s National Assembly.
The ruling Civil Contract faction holds 64 seats in parliament, while the Strong Armenia alliance has 29 seats and the Hayastan alliance holds 12.
