Armenia denies talks on EU migrant centers

Armenia has not discussed the establishment of detention centers for irregular migrants from European Union member states, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ani Badalyan said, according to Sputnik Armenia.

“No such proposal has been made to Armenia, and no such issue has been discussed with us,” she said.

Earlier, the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reported that Italy planned to present a proposal at the European Union Council meeting scheduled for August 4 to discuss creating detention centers for irregular migrants from EU member states in several countries, including Armenia.

According to the newspaper, the preliminary list of countries where such centers could be established includes Rwanda, Ghana, Senegal, Tunisia, Libya, Mauritania, Egypt, Uganda, as well as Uzbekistan, Armenia, Montenegro, and Ethiopia.
