Ancient settlement found at Academic City site

An important archaeological discovery has been made in Yerevan’s Silikyan district, where the Academic City is planned to be built.

During excavations led by archaeologist Hakob Simonyan, researchers uncovered an architectural complex consisting of 34 stone-built rooms, along with tools characteristic of an advanced stone-tool industry.

According to the researchers, the complex may be the oldest settlement identified in the area to date, with a history stretching back thousands of years. The discovery was presented alongside the country’s other major archaeological finds during an event summarizing the results of Armenia’s 2025 archaeological season on March 24, 2026, the Academic City Foundation said.

The discovery adds a new dimension to the Academic City project. The complex, which is being developed to advance education, science and innovation in Armenia, is being built at a site preserving evidence of early human habitation, creating a unique link between the distant past and the future.

Representatives of the Academic City Foundation visited the excavation site and met with the archaeologists conducting the work. During the visit, excavation director Hakob Simonyan said cooperation with international archaeological laboratories would be important to achieve more precise dating of the complex, enabling researchers to establish a more accurate chronology for the unearthed materials.

The statement noted that the archaeological heritage uncovered at the site will be fully incorporated into the project’s conservation and management plans, ensuring its continued study and preservation.

Excavations and research are ongoing. Archaeologists continue to investigate the complex to gain a more comprehensive understanding of its age, significance and role in the settlement history of the Yerevan area.
