Azerbaijani presidential aide Hikmet Hajiyev said Azerbaijan is demonstrating its commitment to peace through concrete actions rather than statements alone. He made the remarks in an interview with the Turkish newspaper Milliyet, Factor.am reported.
According to the report, Hajiyev positively assessed the Armenian government’s adoption of the “Real Armenia” concept as its principal policy approach.
“We realize that the Armenian side has also accepted the new geopolitical reality and is shaping its policies accordingly. Armenia now understands the importance of relations with Azerbaijan and Turkey for its own development,” Hajiyev said.
He also stated that the opening of the so-called “Zangezur Corridor” is part of the new geopolitical reality and argued that it serves the interests of both Azerbaijan and Armenia.
“Because Armenia also understands that having transit opportunities in the region is important for its own development. We want the Azerbaijan–Armenia and Turkey–Armenia peace processes to move forward in parallel and achieve results,” Hajiyev added.
He also reiterated Azerbaijan’s position that, before a final peace agreement can be signed, Armenia should remove from its Constitution provisions that Baku considers to contain territorial claims.
Earlier, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, while presenting the principles of the “Real Armenia” ideology, stressed the importance of adopting a new Constitution. He said approval of a new Constitution through a nationwide referendum is important because, in terms of public perception, previous referendums suffer from a serious lack of legitimacy.
