Armenian Justice Minister Srbuhi Galyan declined to comment on remarks by Azerbaijani presidential aide Hikmet Hajiyev regarding a possible referendum on changing Armenia’s Constitution, saying only that work on a draft constitution is underway.
“I cannot comment on Hajiyev’s remarks. We have said that we are drafting a new constitution,” Galyan said, according to Aysor.am.
She added that constitutional reforms have been under discussion for years and that any decision on whether to change Armenia’s Constitution is an internal matter for the Republic of Armenia.
“It is the people who will decide whether to have a new Constitution or not. It is no secret that a draft constitution is being prepared,” she said.
Earlier, Azerbaijani presidential aide Hikmet Hajiyev said in Turkey that Baku expects provisions it describes as containing “territorial claims against Azerbaijan and Turkey” to be removed from Armenia’s Constitution.
“We are receiving signals that the process of adopting a new Constitution will begin in Armenia soon. A referendum may be held. Once the territorial claims are removed from the preamble of Armenia’s Constitution, Azerbaijan will see no obstacle to signing a final peace agreement,” Hajiyev said.
