Russia’s Foreign Ministry has said that the Armenian leadership’s policy toward Kyiv raises questions about Yerevan’s willingness to maintain a genuine allied partnership with Moscow. The statement was made during a briefing by Alexey Fadeyev, Deputy Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Information and Press Department.
“In one way or another, this political course, which undoubtedly includes demonstrative ‘games’ with the Kyiv regime, raises serious doubts about the readiness of the Armenian authorities for genuine allied cooperation with Russia,” Fadeyev said, according to TASS.
He added that if Yerevan expects its interests to be taken into account, Moscow can likewise expect the same from the Armenian side.
Fadeyev said that Russia currently has the impression that Armenia’s leadership views bilateral relations as a one-sided process. He added that Moscow expects a more realistic and balanced approach.
In May, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy took part in the European Political Community summit held in Yerevan. Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the Armenian leadership had not responded to Zelenskyy’s remarks about striking Moscow on May 9, despite previously assuring Russia that it would not take actions against it.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan later said he saw no problem with inviting Zelenskyy to Yerevan because Armenia does not consider itself Russia’s ally on the issue of Ukraine.
