Armenia to participate in CIS summit in Turkmenistan

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, during a telephone conversation with Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, confirmed Armenia’s participation in the CIS summit. This was reported by the Vatan news program on Turkmen television, RIA Novosti writes.

A meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Commonwealth of Independent States will be held in Turkmenistan in October.

According to the source, the two countries’ leaders spoke by phone on Friday at the initiative of the Armenian side. During the conversation, Berdimuhamedov noted that, as part of Turkmenistan’s chairmanship of the CIS, the summit of the heads of the Commonwealth’s member states is scheduled to take place on October 9 in the Avaza national tourist zone and invited Pashinyan to attend the meeting.

“Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, thanking him for the invitation, noted that Turkmenistan’s foreign policy aimed at strengthening sustainable development in the region enjoys broad support from the international community and also said that Armenia would actively participate in this summit,” the report said.

The Armenian side’s statement on Pashinyan’s telephone conversation with Berdimuhamedov makes no mention of the CIS summit.

Earlier, Russian Ambassador to Turkmenistan Ivan Volynkin said that Russian President Vladimir Putin would also participate in the summit of CIS leaders.

According to the Armenian side’s statement, the two leaders discussed issues related to the further development of Armenia-Turkmenistan relations and the bilateral agenda, emphasizing the importance of expanding trade and economic ties and taking consistent steps in that direction.

Nikol Pashinyan also addressed the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17), which will be held in Armenia this October, and invited Serdar Berdimuhamedov to Armenia to participate in the Leaders’ Summit to be held as part of COP17. The Turkmen president gladly accepted the invitation.
