The withdrawal of the Russian military base would not have positive consequences for Armenia’s security, Strong Armenia party leader Samvel Karapetyan said during a briefing with journalists outside the Anti-Corruption Court.
“If the Russian military base is withdrawn from Armenia, we will be left unprotected in this region,” Karapetyan said, Sputnik Armenia reports.
In his view, there should be a military base in the country: if the Russians are not there, then the Turks will be.
Karapetyan also emphasized that they have no delimitation plan at all, Radar Armenia reports.
“We have a plan to reclaim the lands,” Karapetyan stressed.
Earlier, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said during a briefing with journalists that the presence of the Russian military base in Armenia was not a vital necessity. According to him, if Russia decides to withdraw the military base from the Republic of Armenia, the Armenian authorities will not object.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a conversation with journalists following his September 1 meeting with Pashinyan in Bishkek that if Armenia believes it does not need a Russian military base, Russia is prepared to withdraw it even tomorrow.
