The Prosecutor General’s Office has received and taken action on a petition from Aram Sargsyan, chairman of the Republic Party, addressed to Prosecutor General Anna Vardapetyan. The agency confirmed the information, Factor.am reports.
Sargsyan had appealed to the Prosecutor General, requesting an examination of South Caucasus Railway’s operations, possible abuses, the dismantling of railway infrastructure and potential damage caused to the state. He also called for criminal proceedings to be initiated if indications of a crime were identified.
“On September 10, 2018, in an interview with the Kommersant newspaper, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, referring to the activities of South Caucasus Railway (SCR) Closed Joint-Stock Company, stated that abuses at the company amounted to approximately 60 million U.S. dollars. According to the Prime Minister, an investigative body was conducting an investigation, and official information was expected to be released in the near future. He emphasized: ‘You may regard what I am saying as official information.’ Given the nature of the Prime Minister’s statement and the amount mentioned, I consider it necessary to establish what happened to the investigation or examinations being conducted at that time, what results were recorded, and whether any potential damage caused to the state has been compensated,” Aram Sargsyan’s petition states.
The criminal case initiated in 2018 was closed in March 2021. At the same time, no official statement has been published regarding compensation for any damage potentially caused to the state as a result of the alleged abuses cited by the Prime Minister.
