Armenia marks 35th anniversary of independence

Independent Republic of Armenia is 35 years old. More than three decades ago, an overwhelming majority of Armenia’s population voted “yes” to independence in a referendum.

By a decision of Armenia’s Supreme Council, a referendum on secession from the Soviet Union was held on September 21, 1991, with 94.99% of eligible citizens voting in favor. On September 23, the Supreme Council proclaimed Armenia independent.

On September 21, 1991, the Armenian people once again gained the right to build their future independently, to be masters of their own land and to restore the statehood lost over the preceding centuries, which they had regained for several years in 1918.

Festive concerts under the theme Enduring State have been held in Gyumri, Vanadzor, Kapan and Ijevan to mark the 35th anniversary of the Republic of Armenia’s independence. The main celebratory concert will take place on September 21 at Republic Square in Yerevan.
