Iranian envoy: Pashinyan visit details not yet agreed

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s visit to Iran has been included in the two countries’ plans for this year, but the specific details have not yet been agreed, Iranian Ambassador to Armenia Khalil Shirgholami said during APRI Forum 2026, Sputnik Armenia reports.

Back in February, reports said Yerevan and Tehran intended to sign a comprehensive document on strategic cooperation. It was expected that this could take place during Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s visit to Tehran in 2026.

“We have not yet moved on to agreeing the details; this is our general plan. We need to work together with Armenian officials, including toward its implementation,” the diplomat said.

Shirgholami also noted that signing a document on a strategic partnership between Iran and Armenia would make it possible to institutionalize bilateral cooperation and clearly define its main areas.

According to the ambassador, work in this direction is already underway, and both sides are making efforts to ensure the document is signed in the near future.

Addressing the construction of the Kajaran tunnel, the diplomat said an Iranian company has already begun the preliminary stage of work. Shirgholami expressed hope that, given the Iranian company’s capabilities and potential, the project could be completed even ahead of schedule.

The project concerns a 7.2-kilometer tunnel planned on the Kajaran-Agarak road section. It will become Armenia’s longest tunnel until the 8.6-kilometer Bargushat tunnel is constructed.
