Simonyan tells Aliyev his remarks cause concern in Armenia

Armenian Security Council Secretary Alen Simonyan said he had an opportunity to speak with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and tell him that his statements were received with considerable sensitivity in Armenia. Simonyan made the remarks during a press briefing at the Meridian Expo Center.

“I had an opportunity to tell President Aliyev this. I told him: ‘You should know that your statements are received very sensitively in the Republic of Armenia. And when we talk about peace, you also have an important role to play, and your rhetoric is closely followed in Armenia,'” Simonyan said, Sputnik Armenia reported.

According to the Security Council secretary, the Azerbaijani president listened carefully to his observations and responded briefly, saying, “All right, fine.”

Simonyan also said he did not consider Azerbaijan’s absence from COP17 in Yerevan to be a problem.

“That is their decision. It should not be projected onto our relations. There is no tension in that regard, nor is any expected,” Simonyan noted.

In his view, just as there are challenges in explaining various issues to Armenian society, similar challenges exist in Azerbaijan.

On October 15, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, speaking at the seventh meeting of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia in Baku, described Armenians as “occupiers and child killers,” “barbarians” and “fascists.” He also claimed that Armenia’s three former presidents were “war criminals” who had “not yet been punished.”
