Armenia’s Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan has issued a congratulatory message to media representatives on Armenian Press Day, emphasizing the importance of a free press in developing a democratic society and protecting human rights.
“Every democratic state must guarantee the public’s right to receive reliable and comprehensive information, as well as safeguards enabling journalists to carry out their professional activities without undue obstacles or pressure.
“At the same time, the activities of media outlets must be grounded in the principles of responsible journalism and professional ethics. The dissemination of information should contribute to greater public awareness and informed decision-making, while avoiding approaches that promote hate speech or deepen intolerance between different groups in society.
“As Human Rights Defender, I reaffirm my commitment to supporting efforts aimed at protecting journalists’ rights and ensuring the safeguards necessary for their professional activities, within the framework of the Human Rights Defender’s constitutional powers.
“I also attach particular importance to effective cooperation between the Human Rights Defender’s Office and media outlets. Cooperation conducted in accordance with professional and ethical principles can help address existing challenges in human rights protection, raise public awareness and strengthen a culture of respect for and protection of rights,” the message reads.
