Claims by some journalists about the alleged dangers of continued operation of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (ANPP) are perplexing, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said.
She emphasized Rosatom’s responsible approach to fulfilling its obligations, RIA Novosti reports.
“Considering that the main partner of the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant is the state corporation Rosatom, which consistently takes a responsible approach to fulfilling its obligations, the claims made by certain journalists cause nothing but bewilderment. They only raise questions about how much those journalists were paid to receive their instructions,” Zakharova stated.
The Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson also expressed the opinion that the publication of such reports could be motivated by certain groups seeking to undermine joint Armenian-Russian initiatives in the nuclear energy sector.
Modernization work has been carried out at the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant. In particular, the modernization of its second power unit was completed in 2021 with the support of the state corporation Rosatom. The Armenian government has also adopted a decision providing for the launch of a process to extend the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant’s operating life until 2036.
