Armenia considers potential bid to host UN climate summit

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said at a press briefing that Armenia could consider submitting a bid to host a climate Conference of the Parties (COP).

“Given that we are hosting COP17 at a high level, perhaps Armenia should also consider bidding to host the climate COP,” he said, 1lurer.am reported.

He added that Armenia is positioning itself as a country capable of hosting international meetings to high standards.

“This is already an established fact, because the European Political Community summit was held in Yerevan at a high level, and COP17 is also being held at a high level. Every last penny spent will return to Armenia’s economy,” he said.

On the evening of October 18, the official opening ceremony of the 17th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17) took place at the Meridian Center in Yerevan. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan attended the ceremony and delivered a speech. In his remarks, he said Armenia views its COP17 presidency as an opportunity to unite the international community’s efforts and direct them toward practical, tangible results.
