Narek Karapetyan says opposition is ready for snap elections

Narek Karapetyan, head of the Strong Armenia parliamentary faction, has responded on Facebook to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s statement about the possibility of early parliamentary elections.

“We are ready. Just name the date. People must raise their voices against your endless concessions,” he wrote.

Agnessa Khamoyan, a lawmaker from the Hayastan parliamentary faction, was asked by a journalist whether she or other members of the faction could be persuaded to vote in favor of constitutional amendments. She replied that Pashinyan could not count on the support of the Hayastan alliance, Aravot reports.

“Even before Nikol Pashinyan’s statement, during the election campaign, during the elections, after the elections and in the National Assembly, we stated that we oppose the ‘Aliyev-style constitution.’ We have said in various speeches and interviews that he cannot count on the Hayastan alliance. We will not vote in favor,” she said.

During a briefing on October 22, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan addressed the issue of constitutional amendments, saying that the government should try to persuade opposition colleagues that changing the Constitution is an important matter of principle. If those efforts fail, he said, the authorities could pursue an alternative scenario, including early elections.
