Armenia’s Church inquiry commission approves working procedures

The parliamentary inquiry commission established to examine issues concerning the crisis within the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church, allegedly arising from the activities of several clergymen, and the resulting failure to fulfill the Church’s unique mission in the spiritual life of the Armenian people, the development of national culture and the preservation of national identity, approved its operating procedures by vote at a meeting on October 26.

During the meeting, commission chair Arman Yeghoyan presented matters relating to the approval of the commission’s operating procedures, the conduct of meetings, whether open or closed, deadlines and the participation of invited individuals, according to the parliament’s press service.

He said the commission has the authority to invite government officials, specialists and experts. Information and conclusions obtained during closed meetings will be made public upon completion of the commission’s work, in accordance with the law.

A report titled “On the Crisis in the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church Resulting from the Activities of Its De Facto Head and Several Senior Clergymen, and Ways to Resolve It” has been published. The report states that its preparation stems from the Armenian government’s 2026–2031 program and that it was commissioned by the prime minister. It was prepared by the Public Relations and Information Center State Non-Commercial Organization.

As a first step, the report proposes establishing a Reform Coordination Group comprising clergy and laypeople and publishing the procedure for expanding its membership. The second proposed step is the “removal of the de facto head” of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
