Narek Karapetyan, head of the Strong Armenia faction, addressed problems in the online taxi services sector during a session of Armenia’s National Assembly. The issue was raised during discussions of the candidacy of Shushan Sargsyan, nominated by the Civil Contract party for membership in the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission.
“There are many complaints from online taxi drivers about fare increases,” he said, Panorama.am reports.
According to the lawmaker, a monopolistic position has emerged in the market, while effective mechanisms to restrain fares and introduce appropriate regulations are lacking.
“What proposals will you make to the National Assembly to protect these people’s rights?” he asked.
In response, Sargsyan said she also considers it necessary to introduce appropriate regulatory mechanisms. She expressed the view that certain steps would be taken in this direction in the near future.
Karapetyan, for his part, emphasized that addressing the problems faced by online taxi drivers is among the issues requiring urgent solutions. He added that a legislative initiative could be introduced to address the question of ensuring decent incomes for online taxi drivers.
