Lavrov hopes for new 3+3 meeting soon

Russia hopes that another meeting of the regional 3+3 consultation format will take place in the near future, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said during a high-level plenary session of the Fourth Minsk International Conference on Eurasian Security.

The format envisages the participation of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia, alongside Russia, Iran and Turkey, in discussions on regional cooperation in the South Caucasus.

“The platform’s participants have agreed to advance a unifying agenda. We hope that another meeting in this format will take place in the near future,” Lavrov said, according to RIA Novosti.

The consultative platform held its first meeting in Moscow in December 2021 at the level of deputy foreign ministers. The second meeting took place in Tehran in October 2023 and was the first held at the foreign minister level.

The most recent meeting of the 3+3 platform took place in Istanbul on October 18, 2024.

The initiative to establish the six-party 3+3 consultation format was proposed in late 2020 by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. It was intended as a platform for consultations on regional cooperation involving Russia, Turkey, Iran, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia.

Georgia has repeatedly been invited to participate in the platform but has not attended any of its meetings to date.
