Vladimir Socor, the U.S. political analyst of East European affairs for the Jamestown Foundation, urges NATO to intensify activities to decrease Russia’s influence in South Caucasus.
''Russia is strengthening its military presence in Abkhazia, which poses a threat to the whole Black Sea region, with Russia controlling the air corridor in this area. Besides, the country increases its presence in Sevastopol’s naval base, as well as the areal of military deployment in Armenia. Russia used the Black Sea Fleet against Georgia in 2008, thus having violated Sevastopol treaty. Besides, Russia hampers international inspection in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which arises suspicions as to the legality of the country's actions,'' the analyst stated. ''Russia has never assumed obligation for political agreements it was involved in,'' Our Abkhazia internet portal cited Socor as saying.
