The Turkish parliament adopted a document calling on French authorities to abolish the bill penalizing denial of the Armenian Genocide, IHA reports.
The document says that adoption of such legislation “would be a historical mistake, since the study of the past events is in strict domain of historians.”
Moreover, Turkish MPs called upon French legislators to abandon the “policy of double standards” and “refrain from steps potentially dangerous for Turkish-French relations.”
Since early December, Turkish authorities have threatened to sever ties with France in the event the bill stipulating for a one-year prison sentence and 45,000 euro fine for denying the Armenian Genocide is approved by the National Assembly.
The vote on the bill is scheduled for December 22.
