The Office of the Prosecutor General of Armenia has instituted criminal proceedings against illegal actions of the opposition during meetings. As reported by the press service of the Office of the Prosecutor General, “since February 2004 Justice opposition bloc and people siding with it were organizing mainly unsanctioned meetings in the country, publicly offending representatives of the authorities, called to violent seizure of the state power and changing the constitutional order in the country.” Statements that could destabilize the situation in the country were made in a number of Yerevan communities, as well as villages and towns of Kotayk and Ararat regions. As reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General, the meeting in Gyumri (second biggest city of Armenia) was accompanied by disturbance of public order, use of violence against otherwise-minded citizens and resistance to the law-enforcement bodies. It should be noted that Armenian opposition forces – Justice bloc and National Unity Party – have signed a joint document on intention to organize a “nationwide insubordination” meeting before mid-April.
