“The discussion of the item “on the situation in seized territories of Azerbaijan” will do a serious harm to the peacemaking process”, Sergey Merzlyakov, the Russian Co-Chair of the OSCE Minsk Group for Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement stated. In his words, the UN is not the very institution to discuss the Karabakh problem as the OSCE is dealing with it. In the interview to ATV Azeri Channel he noted that voting against the inclusion of the item in the UN General Assembly agenda, France’s representative expressed not only the position of his government but also the position Moscow and Washington hold. “Today, when everyone is expecting the resumption of the negotiations, there was no need in such an initiative”, Yuri Merzlyakov said. “The discussion of this issue will do more harm than good to the peaceful negotiations.” The MG Russian Co-Chair also noted that “one should not mix up the resolution of the UN General Assembly with the resolution of the UN Security Council as the Assembly’s resolution bear recommendation nature only.”
