Irrespective of the choice of American citizens, the quality of the US-Armenia relations will not experience fundamental changes, stated Secretary of the Security council under the Armenian President, Defense Minister Serge Sargsian in the course of a meeting, organized in the US Embassy in Yerevan on the occasion of the presidential election in the US. As US Ambassador to Armenia John Evans told those present in the Embassy for obsering the presidential race, “Democracy is a hard work. Choice will be made in the US and the elected candidate will become President.” It should be noted that answering the question whether Armenia’s decision on sending a contingent to Iraq depends on who is elected the US leader, the Armenian Defense Department leader said the answer fully depends on the resolution of the National Assembly of Armenia. At the same time in the opinion of National Unity opposition party leader Artashes Geghamian, taking into account the contemporary geopolitical processes, the main task to be fulfilled by the newly elected President should lie in not admitting a clash of civilizations. In his words, a point of such a collision can become Nagorno Karabakh and Armenia – “a Christian stronghold in the Islamic surrounding”. “I suppose the winner of the presidential election in the US should begin his activities from the solution of that very question,” Geghamian stated. It should be noted that according to the returns of the election held in jest among the participants of the meeting in the Embassy in the morning, Democrat Senator John Kerry celebrated a convincing victory – 42 votes against 8. A “ballot” for the Green Party and another in favor of Robert Kocharian were also found in the ballot box.
