Eduard Aghabekian was elected mayor in a hard election struggle with the candidate nominated by the authorities. It is also known that that he opposed to the Nagorno Karabakh executive powers when being a deputy. However, during a press conference Eduard Aghabekian noted that he does not conflict with the Karabakh leadership at present. On the 100-th day of his mayoralty he gave a briefing and stated that he considers the establishment of municipal power in Nagorno Karabakh to be his major political goal. To note, E. Aghabekian is the founder of Movement 88, a public political union, which stands to win the parliamentary elections in summer 2005.
